Mia’s First Days

An in-home newborn session, and the beginning of life as five.

BY APRIL · APRIL K PHOTO

There is something about photographing a new baby alongside older siblings that I love. The baby is brand new, but there is already a whole family story happening around her.

With Mia, I kept coming back to the photographs of all five of them together. Her little blue dress, her brother and sister beside her, the way she fit into her parents’ arms. These are the details that make a newborn gallery feel like someone’s life.

A new baby, a whole family story

I want siblings to have a place in these photographs, too. Their childhood is happening right alongside the baby’s first days. A photograph of them leaning over the crib holds something different from a portrait of everyone looking at the camera. I love having both.

Years from now, I hope Mia sees these images and notices more than how small she was. I hope she sees the people who were there with her, and the home where their life together was unfolding.

What I love about newborn photographs at home

Home gives these photographs their own context. The bed where everyone can gather. The window light. The crib her siblings can peek into. Familiar places become part of the record of those early days.

My approach to in-home lifestyle newborn photography includes gently guided family portraits, photographs of parents and siblings with the baby, and the little details you want to remember. There is room for a beautiful portrait and for everything that happens around it.

As a mom of three, I know how easy it is to remember a season in broad strokes and lose some of its smaller details. That is part of why I photograph the tiny feet, the baby tucked against a shoulder, and the older children as they are right now.

Mia’s gallery brings those pieces together. A new baby, two older siblings, and a family of five at the beginning of this next chapter.
